From the Principal

Dear Parents, Guardians and Community Members

Welcome back to Term 3. This term has lots of exciting things to look forward to including Book Week, Science Week, Year 6 camp, Choir Music Festival, Learning Journey evening and P&C disco. A term planner has been attached.

I would like to give a warm welcome to our new permanent Deputy Principal, Mrs Simone Barndon. Mrs Barndon has joined us from Karratha. She is very excited to be at Yakamia PS and is looking forward to meeting and working with students, staff and families. Mrs Barndon will over see the K-2 area of the school and is always available for parents to contact if any support is needed.

NAPLAN results for students in Years 3 and 5 have arrived and will be sent home today. New proficiency standards have been introduced this year, moving away from ‘numerical bands’ to four proficiency levels. There is an information sheet with the report that provides information for parents regarding the new standards. Please take the time to read this and if you have any questions, please see your class teacher.

Our school community is a vibrant and diverse representation of society, where children learn and grow. We rely on the local community, parents and families to partner with us in their children’s learning journey and encourage open communication.

We all share a responsibility for providing a safe, supportive and productive environment, free from bullying, harassment, discrimination and violence. Parents, carers and other visitors to our school, support safety by ensuring communication and conduct at school and during school activities is respectful. We all have the right to feel safe and be safe at school.

The Department of Education has recently released Connect and Respect, a suite of resources to assist school communities in setting shared and respectful expectations to enable us to continue to work together in the best interests of our children.

This includes when and how to contact the school, what you can expect from us and the behaviours that interfere with teaching and learning. These resources and guidelines will assist us to continue to build upon our culture of connection and engagement, and we will implement them to support our staff to deliver quality education at our school. Please see the following pages for these guidelines.

Our next assembly will be Week 4 and hosted by Room 16. All families are welcome to attend.

Kind regards – Gemma Larham
